When Should You Replace Your Car Battery?

Seen by: 669,

Many people have questions like when does a car battery need to be replaced? How often should we replace a car battery? How long does a car battery last?

In fact, it depends on where you live and how you drive, the condition of your charging system, and a number of other factors.

1. When your car battery loses its capacity

Over time, a battery loses its capacity or ability to hold charge. If the battery is not properly maintained, it will greatly reduce the service life of the battery. For example, driving a short distance and frequently starting the car will damage the battery. In addition, the behaviour of not driving for a long time will also cause the battery to lose power. If the frequency of this bad practice is frequent, the battery life will have a certain impact.

2. When your car battery show signs of these problems

Here are some signs that your car battery is dying:

  • A slow starting/cranking engine - You have to wait a few extra seconds for the engine to turn over and start running
  • Dim lights and electrical issues- Dash lights flicker or dim when you are starting your car
  • The check engine light is on- The check engine light sometimes appears when your battery power is weak
  • A bad smell- Damage to the battery or an internal short can cause the battery to leak gas
  • Excessive corrosion at the battery terminals and cables

To avoid this situation, a battery should be replaced before its capacity drops to a critical level and eventually goes flat. So how do we determine whether the car battery’s capacity is getting lower? Or your battery is near the end of its service life?

Battery Capacity Test

Can a car battery capacity be tested?

The answer is yes. The battery capacity is often measured in CCA or Cold Cranking Amps.

We provide service to test your battery with a battery tester both with the battery installed or out of your vehicle. The battery tester can measure the actual CCA and compare it to the new battery CCA rating. A battery tester can also test the alternator and the charging system by connecting to your car battery when your engine is running.
