Cleaning mass air flow sensor with Liqui Moly

What is a Mass Air Flow Sensor? Do we need to clean it?

Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF Sensor) is a piece of technology within your engine which tells your car's computer (known as ECU) how much air is entering the engine. This is important as it allows your engine to regulate its performance and change the amount of air intake to keep your engine running in its best condition. Think of the air intake system as our nose and lung, and while the Mass Air Flow Sensor is the same as our brain that controls our breathing when we are sitting still or when exercising.

Q: What happens when your car’s Mass Air Flow Sensor is contaminated?

A: Well, you probably may not notice it but have already experienced it first hand when your car engine idles roughly or suddenly stalls. A contaminated Mass Air Flow Sensor will send the wrong airflow information to the engine’s computer. The computer will miscalculate the amount of airflow due to the lack of information and deliver too little fuel, making the idle rough and stalling out the engine at times.

Q: What are the symptoms of a contaminated Mass Air Flow Sensor?

A: Here are some of the most common symptoms of a contaminated or faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor:

  • The engine is very hard to start or turn over.
  • The engine stalls shortly after starting.
  • The engine hesitation or drags while under load or idle.
  • Hesitation and jerking during acceleration.
  • The engine hiccups.
  • Excessively rich or lean idling.
  • Engine check light appear on dashboard meter.

Q: When do we need to use LIQUI MOLY Air Flow Sensor Cleaner?

A: Well, if you are already facing rough engine idling or stalling, you should use it to clean your MAF Sensor immediately to see the results! As for preventive measure, it is strongly recommended to clean your mass airflow sensor every 6 months, or every time you change your engine oil. You may also clean it when you change or clean your air filter, that will be a good way to save both time and money.

Q: What will happen if we don't clean our air flow sensor in long run?

A: We can ignore most parts of the car getting dirty but definitely not the Mass Air Flow Sensor. A contaminated Mass Air Flow Sensor will cause annoying problems initially such as engine stalling, and eventually causes your car to breakdown completely when the contamination becomes even more serious.
